Shem is not amused by Qeriah's new hobby. Shem's anger makes him short-circuit. Shem reverts to his rawer form.
In Update #21, "Mother May I? Part 2", we learn that while Shem 'Etzem's holy form may easily defeat the Bavel Macrostructure’s minions, it’s no match for Em Qeriah’s lack of seriousness. Will Shem’s hair-trigger temper prevent him from becoming the Evaluator of Names? While this issue mostly continues the arguments and power struggles among the rising generation of Holy Tongue Society leadership and the old, it also shows how Shem can revert from his powerful, holy שום form back to his still-powerful, but baser עצם form. Adam comes up for a good reason at the end of this update. Get ready to learn more in the next update! (By the way, this webcomic will discontinue the numerical "Episode" system where some episodes last for multiple updates. While the next update would technically be Episode 16, this website's formatting plus ones like Webtoon and Tapas make the old system archaic. We'll just stick to numbering according to updates.) Other news Although it's not fully implemented, we updated the Wordpress theme to Toocheke Premium, which will allow us to use more Patreon and WooCommerce integration. If you've noticed that the site was slower recently, it's because we were trying to implement those features. I'm hoping to ask around to figure out a way to have the site run reasonably quickly plus have our own online store and bonus webpages for Patreon subscribers only. By the way, please sign up for my Patreon! Even a dollar a month adds up... Also, keep checking our wiki for updates. I've been adding beta sections to the Milhamah RPG storytelling game, plus there are all sorts of details about the comic there. Anyway, thanks for reading, and I hope to bring more updates soon!

Shem Peraṭi

Shem Perati, the proper noun, is Shem 'Etzem's father.

Shem Peraṭi represents the proper noun in “Milhamah: Fighting Words” and is the father of the story’s main protagonist, Shem ‘Etzem. Just as ‘Etzem has an affinity for garlic, Peraṭi favors mushrooms.

Peraṭi is a famous researcher, engineer and inventor who built some of Avgad’s finest pieces of technology. The Bavel Macrostructure hired him to create a network of Bavel Gate portals. However, he longs to quit and pursue his research of shoresh roots. (He keeps a secret inventory of dozens of specimens.)

Rumors call him a mad scientist who splits otiyot letters and rearranges them into time-warping chronograms and space-warping anagrams.

While Peraṭi is a private, fiercely independent person, he also is an aspiring musician. Sometimes, when he enters the public square, he disguises himself in a shabby overcoat and busks for change.  He goes nowhere without his Postlude Lyre and Shredding Plectrum, as well as his disintegrating Ṭoref Scrambler for self-defense.

Peraṭi gets his powers from the טפר shoresh family, which governs fathers, plectrums, mushrooms, privacy, inventories, specimens, small change, playing stringed instruments, shabbiness, scramblers, tearing, creating, disintegrating, splitting and quitting.

Who is Peter Tarfa? A mysterious kidnapper and bounty hunter. Ṭarfa is the known name of a mysterious bounty hunter. This fierce, unholy predator is known to kidnap for ransom, rend targets with beastlike claws, or cleave to kill with a Lamina Blade machete. Thanks to plant powers, Ṭarfa can hide in foliage while surviving on a diet of plucked grapes, edible greens and forbidden meats. But what is this one’s true motive? Ṭarfa is powered by the טרפ shoresh family, which governs ransom, food ritual impurity, claws, tearing to pieces, leaf blades, plucking, grapes and more.

Ṭoref Scrambler

The Toref Scrambler can brainwash or disintegrate targets. The Ṭoref Scrambler is a disintegration raygun invented by the great engineer Shem Perati, father of Shem ‘Etzem. Peraṭi made the original device, codenamed Haftarah, out of an automatic card shuffler and an egg beater. Peraṭi used it to mine otiyot letters from objects, combine them into new forms and bend the laws of time and space. But the device’s sponsorship came from the occupying Bavel Macrostructure, and the government ended up claiming and abusing the technology. On stun, discharging this gun can scramble a target’s brains and confuse it. Pulling the trigger while on kill disintegrates the target into basic otiyot letters. Bavel leaders ultimately want to weaponize the Toref to profane the Holy Tongue. The Ṭoref Scrambler is powered by the טפר shoresh family, which governs scramblers, eggbeaters, shufflers, items, discharges, triggers, decomposition, death, the Haftarah, confusion, termination, anagrams, chronograms and ritual impurity.   .

Luqäs Mishqal

Luqäs Mishqal owns much of Mattanah and is the guardian of the Metrical Tree.

Luqäs Mishqal represents the linguistic noun pattern. He is the guardian of Tashqili the Metrical Tree, the source of balance and wealth in the primeval garden of Pardes. And as a result of this inheritance, he is one of Avgad’s richest men and owns much of Mattanah City. Although he once backed the ‘Ivrit Revival Movement, his devotion suddenly switched to the Bavel Macrostructure, and now he funds Beli Ya’al’s war machine.

In his spare time, Mishqal consumes a diet of soft dough, grasses, boiled veggies and unripe produce. He hopes this will add mass to his pale, wispy and underdeveloped frame. When he exercises, his body heat elevates and burns all that he touches.

Also while he is weak, his touch has the power to make light metallic objects heavy and heavy metallic objects light. This gives him rhythm and balance in combat when he fights with his scales or pitchfork.

Evaluator eye lenses scan his surroundings for insight, and his composure is normally rational and measured, with only rare outbursts. However, he tends to work slowly and fall behind in his plans.

Luqäs Mishqal gets his power from the לקש family (שקל shoresh), which governs dumbbells, weights, sheqels, lightness, heaviness, boiling, blanching, pitchforks, metrics, lateness and more.

Nanas Dwarf Snail Infiltrator

The Nanas Dwarf Snail Infiltrator can slither into some tight spots. The Nanas is a dwarven Kind that dwells in the city of Mattanah. They’re famous for their skill in sifting through raw material, finding treasure and assembling new products with nanotechnology. The Bavel Macrostructure has oppressed them and forced them to manufacture goods for the Mattanah Corp. However, some have escaped and live in the sewer wells of the Qerur Icehouses, where they forage for valuable amid the wealthy elites’ garbage. Nanas have a proud tradition of riding Dwarf Snail Infiltrators, which are able to sneak and slither into all sorts of tiny spaces. The proper Nanas uniform includes wearing a filtering strainer on the head. And their favorite traditional weapon is a whalebone with a serrated gear-like wheel of claws. The Nanas Dwarf Snail Infiltrator gets its power from the ננס shoresh family, which governs dwarves, filtering, snails, strainers, infiltration and more.
